Early one morning last month, thieves drove up to the back of the church, gutted all nine Church without A/C Unitindustrial-size units and sped off. They caused about $US60,000 ($A58,586) damage to get their hands on about $400 of scrap metal inside – the coils of copper that serve as the arteries of air conditioning units.

56 air conditioners stolen from ISU

ISU facilities management staff contacted campus police about 11:30 a.m. Monday to report the disappearance of the 56 American Standard brand central air units since late-July. If replaced as new, the theft represents a $25,000 loss, said ISU Police Chief Aaron Woodruff.

The thief stole $200 worth of copper tubing, and five air conditioning units worth $9,000.

“AC thefts have been increasing in the last year. He estimates getting five to 10 calls weekly about copper thefts in his rural county.

Between Jan. 1 and May 9, we received more than 250 calls for what he calls the county’s No. 1 crime. The thefts became so frequent that, two years ago, the county assigned an investigator full-time to copper thefts.

Thieves often collect less than $100, after destroying property worth thousands of dollars.
